Short-Term Rentals - August 10, 2020 Malibu City Council Public Hearing
The Malibu City Council will hold a virtual public hearing to consider a short-term rental ordinance on Monday, August 10, 2020 at 6:30 PM. The agenda for the meeting is available on the City’s website.
On Monday, June 22, City Council directed staff to bring back an update of the interim short-term rental ordinance (Zoning Text Amendment No. 17-002) presented to Council on December 3, 2019. The proposed ordinance would put in place a short-term rental permitting system with regulations to address nuisance issues and impacts on neighborhoods and also attach penalties to violations. Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) No. 17-002, which was previously presented to the Planning Commission, is scheduled to be heard by the Council on August 10, 2020. The staff report including the proposed ordinance is available online.
The August 10, 2020 City Council Meeting will be a virtual meeting. Visit the Virtual Meetings webpage for details on how to participate and watch the meeting. Written comments may be submitted by emailing CityCouncil@malibucity.org.
The City is also working on a short-term rental ordinance based on Council’s December 3, 2019 direction to closely follow the home-sharing ordinance implemented by the City of Santa Monica to regulate short-term rental of residential property for 30 days or less. On July 29, 2020, the Planning Commission held a special virtual meeting to consider the associated ZTA to the Malibu Municipal Code and Local Coastal Program (LCP) amendment. Video of that meeting is available on the website.
ZTA 17-002 would be superseded by the regulations, including the requirement of an onsite host, reviewed by the Planning Commission on July 29 and scheduled to be considered by Council in September.
