City of Malibu Seeks Submissions for Surfboard Art Installation to Celebrate City’s 25 Year Anniversary
(Malibu, CA) – As part of the celebrations of the 25-year anniversary of the founding of the City of Malibu, the Malibu Cultural Arts Commission is hosting “Art of the Board,” a surfboard art installation celebrating Malibu’s surfing history and culture.
The City invites the community to participate in this celebration of Malibu’s anniversary and surfing history by submitting historical, unique, and rare surfboards to be included in the installation, which will be suspended in the City Hall atrium. The installation will be unveiled during the City’s 25th anniversary party on March, 28, 2016 at City Hall and will remain on display through September 2016.
The City seeks unique surfboards that tell a story, or are works of visually compelling artistic quality. The surfboards featured and exhibited will be selected based on artistic design, and may include drawings, paintings or graphics. The boards selected for the exhibit will be suspended vertically from the lobby ceiling at varying heights.
To commemorate this special installation and the City’s 25th anniversary, renowned graphic artist John Van Hamersveld will design a special poster and will be on hand for the grand opening. Van Hamersveld gained fame for designing the iconic poster for the classic 1966 surfing film “Endless Summer,” as well as album covers for The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” and the Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street.”
Any resident of Malibu or the surrounding area may submit a surfboard for consideration. The application period starts on Monday, January 11 and the deadline is February 5. To submit your surfboard for consideration, go to malibuartsandculture.org/surfboardart.
