City to Hold Community Outreach Meetings on Bluffs Parkland
Future Uses and Master Plan Design

(Malibu, CA) – The City will be holding a series of community outreach events starting May 18 to share information with and gain input from the community about the potential future uses and design of the Bluffs Parkland project, a major expansion of open space and recreational opportunities for Malibu.

“The Bluffs Parkland project will add a treasure of accessible, natural, green open space and recreational opportunities for Malibu,” said Mayor John Sibert. “We need the input from across Malibu to ensure that we plan for the best possible future uses to meet the community’s needs, so I encourage everyone to attend these outreach events.”

The City hired a design firm to facilitate public design workshops and stakeholder meetings, develop a preliminary master plan design based on community input and to prepare environmental review documents. The community outreach efforts include individual meetings for youth and teens, seniors, and a meeting for all community members as well as an online survey, which all community members are encouraged to take.

  • General community public meeting, May 19, 6:30 PM, at City Hall
  • Online survey, available May 18 through June 19.
  • Up-to-date information on the project, details on public meetings, project timeline, and the online survey, are available at www.malibucity.org/bluffsparkland.

The Bluffs Parkland Master Plan and Environmental Impact Report (EIR) cover 83 acres of undeveloped open space and 10 acres of developed park space. The City and the Santa Monica Conservancy agreed in 2013 to exchange approximately 525 acres of the City-owned Charmlee Wilderness Park for approximately 83 acres of vacant land adjacent to the City’s Malibu Bluffs Park.

The project design elements may include athletic fields, skatepark, dog park, community center, aquatic facility, walking trails, picnic areas, playground, on-site parking, maintenance yard and restroom facilities. These park features are based on community input from public meetings, focus groups and surveys, identifying unmet needs for recreational facilities in Malibu gathered during the development of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan (www.malibucity.org/index.aspx?NID=342).
