Make the Most of Winter Storms with the Rain Barrel
Incentive Program

(Malibu CA) – While California’s drought is not over, the first of this season’s winter storms delivered several inches of precious rain across the state, so it’s a perfect time for Malibu residents to get a rebate for a rain harvesting barrel.

Malibu residents can get a $100 rebate per rain barrel for up to four barrels per household, funded by Metropolitan Water District. To quality, the barrels must hold a minimum of 50 gallons and has to be used properly to collect and distribute rainwater. To see all of the guidelines or to apply for a rebate, visit SoCal WaterSmart website at www.socalwatersmart.com.

The City’s water wholesaler, West Basin Municipal Water District, District 4, is also holding a free rain barrel giveaway at the West Basin facility in El Segundo in early 2015. The City will post the date and pick up location on Twitter and Facebook as soon as the date is set.

Rainwater harvesting is a system for collecting rainwater from rooftops and other above-ground impervious surfaces and storing the water in catchment tanks to be used to water indoor and outdoor plants and landscaping, reducing the use of scarce and expensive drinking water for irrigation. Systems can range from a simple barrel at the bottom of a downspout to multiple cisterns with pumps and filtration.

By capturing rainwater from our rooftops and other surfaces before it runs down storm drains, carrying street pollution, bacteria, fertilizers and pesticides into the ocean, we can lessen the impacts of California’s drought on our gardens, wildlife, and lifestyles.

For more information call Casey Zweig at (310) 456-2489 ext. 236 or email czweig@malibucity.org.
