Malibu Launches Project to Chart Future Vision of Malibu Civic Center

Project includes Design Task Force & Two-Day Open House for Community Input

Malibu, CA (Sept. 30, 2014) – The City of Malibu is launching a new Civic Center Design Standards Project to help establish the future vision of the Malibu Civic Center, with a two-day Open House event, and the creation of a Design Standards Taskforce.

The City is calling on civic-minded Malibu community members to attend the Open House event and help create design standards for Malibu Civic Center’s architecture, building form, landscaping, and the relationship of development and buildings to the public streetscape, that are in line with community standards.

The City also created a special e-notification list that will send an email or text message to anyone who signs up, whenever anything related to the Civic Center Design Standards Project is posted on the City’s website. To sign up for the e-notifications, visit www.malibucity.org/news.

On a parallel track, City Planning staff and the City’s consultant team, MIG, Inc., will be working closely with a Task Force appointed by the City Council to develop a Vision Document and Guiding Principles for the Civic Center Area and Design Standards. After the community and Task Force input is gathered, the draft Design Standards will be reviewed by the Planning Commission and ultimately voted on by the City Council.

The City is now accepting applications for the Civic Center Design Standards Task Force. All Malibu residents, business owners, property owners or other stakeholders may apply, however, those already serving on another City commission are not eligible. To apply, visit http://www.malibucity.org/DocumentCenter/View/4.

The two-day Open House event on October 17 and 18, hosted by the City planning staff and MIG will feature several interactive “Topic Stations,” guided and self-guided walking tours, interactive surveys, and a discussion forum.

The interactive Topic Stations will give participants the chance to learn more about specific subjects in depth, and will include Malibu Character, Formula Retail Architecture and Signage, Connectivity and Gathering Spaces/Landscaping and Sustainability, and a One-on-One Station with a City Planner available to answer specific questions.

All of the Open House events are free of charge and open to all, and participants can attend all activities or drop in for any individual activity. RSVPs for the guided walking tours are desired, but not necessary. To RSVP for the guided walking tours, please contact Bonnie Blue at bblue@malibucity.org.
