Historic Drought Prompts Malibu to Introduce New Online Water Waste Report Form to Help Conserve Water

(Malibu CA) – Malibu has introduced a new online form to allow residents to report water waste as part of the City’s efforts to conserve water amidst one of the worst droughts in California history.

The drought presents a challenge for every community in the state that can only be overcome if people to come together to conserve water. Malibu depends entirely upon imported supplies for its drinking water, so it is crucial that all community members, government agencies, businesses and other stakeholders make a collective effort to use water wisely, eliminate runoff, and reduce water waste, creating a culture of water conservation and water quality protection.

Malibu residents can be part of that effort by reporting excessive water waste using the City’s new, easy-to-use online Water Waster Report http://www.malibucity.org/WaterWaster.

Anyone who sees water being wasted - a broken irrigation pipe, a malfunctioning sprinkler, a hose left running, or other similar event – should report it. City staff will respond to all reports and offer assistance in resolving water issues. If the water waste is observed again after 14 days, it should be reported again. The City will monitor repeat offenders and act accordingly, and will always keep the identity of those submitting a report confidential.

The City of Malibu is a leader in water conservation, and has had progressive water conservation policies in place since the City’s founding in 1991, including:

  • Irrigation is prohibited between the hours of 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
  • Owners of any indoor or outdoor plumbing fixtures shall not permit water to leak from such fixtures.
  • Irrigation may not run off onto streets, gutters, or adjacent properties.
  • A trigger nozzle on hoses is required for home car washing.
  • Washing hardscapes such as sidewalks, parking areas, and driveways is not permitted.
  • It is only permitted to fill any swimming pool, wading pool, or spa by adding water to top off.
  • Potable water (unless it is part of a recycling system) must not be used to clean, fill, or maintain levels in ponds, decorative fountains, or artificial lakes.
  • Restaurants, hotels, and cafes shall only serve drinking water upon request.

Saving water also saves money. Malibu residents can learn about valuable water conservation rebates offered by the local water districts at www.malibucity.org/rebates.
