[ARCHIVED] Malibu Library Speaker Series Featuring Education Researcher & Critic Alfie Kohn

Speaker Series Alfie Kohn

The City of Malibu and L.A. County Library present the Malibu Library Speaker Series featuring education researcher and critic Alfie Kohn discussing his innovative theories and his books, Wednesday, August 28, 7:00 PM at City Hall.

Kohn argues that our knowledge of how children learn, and how schools can help, has come a long way in the last few decades. Unfortunately, he points out, and most schools have not. They are still focused on memorizing facts and practicing isolated skills than understanding ideas from the inside out; they still exclude students from any meaningful decision-making role; and they still rely on grades, tests, homework, lectures, worksheets, competition, punishments, and rewards.

In his talk, Kohn will explore the alternatives to each of these conventional practices, explaining why progressive education isn’t just a realistic alternative, but one that’s far more likely to help children become critical thinkers and lifelong learners.

Kohn is the author of 14 books on education, parenting, and human behavior, including “The Schools Our Children Deserve” and “Unconditional Parenting.” He has been described by Time magazine as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” To learn more about Kohn’s work, visit his website at www.alfiekohn.org
