Nominations Open Through May June 4 for the City of Malibu’s 2025 Jake Kuredjian Citizenship Award in Recognition of Contributions to Recreation in Malibu

Community members are encouraged to submit nominations to the City of Malibu to recognize those who have gone above and beyond to enhance the City’s parks, recreation programs, and community well-being by honoring them with the 2025 Jake Kuredjian Citizenship Award.

“Parks and recreation programs and facilities are the heart and soul of a thriving community,” said Mayor Marianne Riggins. “They bring people together, promote health and wellness, and create spaces where lifelong memories are made. This award celebrates those special individuals who have dedicated themselves to enriching our public spaces and programs for the benefit of all. I encourage everyone to nominate a remarkable neighbor or friend who has made a difference in our community.”

Malibu residents are invited to submit nominations online at MalibuCity.org/JakeAward. The nomination period closes at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

The Jake Kuredjian Citizenship Award is presented annually to an individual or group who has made a lasting impact on Malibu’s recreational opportunities. Past recipients have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving parks, programs, and community engagement, helping to make Malibu a healthier, happier place for all.

This award honors the legacy of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Hagop "Jake" Kuredjian, who lost his life in the line of duty on August 31, 2001. Deputy Kuredjian was known for his bravery, dedication, and service, including his heroic efforts in Malibu, where he was awarded the Gold Meritorious Conduct Medal in 1989 for rescuing a woman from a cliff.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will review nominations on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, select a recipient, and make a recommendation to the City Council.
