Safiya Noble - Newsflash

The Malibu Library Speaker Series Presents “Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism”

The 2024 Malibu Library Speaker Series continues with Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble, author of the highly acclaimed book “Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism,” Tuesday, September 17, 7:00 PM in the Civic Theater at Malibu City Hall.

Mayor Doug Stewart encouraged all of Malibu to join this important discussion of the powerful impacts of algorithms on society: “Algorithms have become extremely powerful and widespread driving social media, financial investments, even criminal justice system outcomes, impacting everything from youth mental health, to social justice, to democracy. Please join us for an enlightening and relevant discussion on this transformative technology.”

Dr. Noble is a 2021 MacArthur Fellow and a recipient of the NAACP Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award. She is an internet studies scholar and professor of Gender Studies and African American Studies at UCLA, where she serves as the faculty director for the Center on Race & Digital Justice and the co-director for the Minderoo Initiative on Tech & Power, and where she co-founded the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.

Dr. Noble's research focuses on the ways that digital media impacts our lives and intersects with issues of race, gender, culture, and technology. In this talk, she will discuss her book “Algorithms of Oppression” and delve into issues ranging from marginalization and misrepresentation in commercial information platforms like Google search, to the profound power struggles that violate civil, human, and collective rights through artificial intelligence and machine learning projects.

RSVPs are required for this free event taking place on Tuesday, September 17, 5:00 PM in the Civic Theater at Malibu City Hall, located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.
