Join the City of Malibu’s Environmental Education, Recycling and Sustainability Events in April 
to Celebrate Earth Month

 

The City of Malibu is pleased to announce a month-long series of events and activities in celebration of Earth Month. Community members can enjoy environmental education and recycling activities during April promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship as a way of life in Malibu. "The guidance in Malibu’s General Plan is very clear. The people of Malibu are a responsible custodian of the area’s natural resources for present and future generations. Our founding fathers recognized that celebrating nature and protecting the environment would unite our community, so I invite everyone in Malibu to be part of our Earth Month activities,” said Mayor Steve Uhring. “Please join with your neighbors in the global effort to protect and preserve our planet.”

April 22 is the 54th Earth Day, the world's largest event dedicated to preserving our planet. Throughout April, the City is committed to inviting community participation in the City’s environmental events highlighting recycling, waste reduction, water conservation, and energy efficiency, and empowering the community to adopt sustainable practices. 

This year’s Earth Month events include Electronic and Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Document Shred Day, Organic Recycling Virtual Training, the 2024 State of the Watershed and a Firescaping class. All events are free and open to the public. The City will also be posting sustainability tips on social media throughout Earth Month

 

Pepperdine University Earth Day Fair

Tuesday, April 9, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Pepperdine will host its Earth Day Celebration, which incorporates student and community organizations outreach booths, educational events, and food. The City will participate with an outreach booth to share information about ongoing programs and upcoming events and offers students and faculty the opportunity to connect with the environmental community outside the school campus. Climate Calling 2024: Malibu Library Speaker Series

Thursday, April 11, 5:00 PM. Pepperdine University, the City and the Malibu Library present a special Earth Month Malibu Library Speaker Series featuring Rosanna Xia, Los Angeles Times environmental reporter and columnist, who will examine how environmental journalists today are writing about climate change. She will discuss lessons learned on how to turn complex issues into memorable and deeply-felt stories. Xia will also introduce her new book, “California Against the Sea,” and share insights from her award-winning reporting on sea level rise. Free with RSVP. Malibu Organics Recycling Virtual Training

Wednesday, April 17, 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM. Join the City’s virtual training on organics recycling, waste reduction, and proper separation of kitchen food scraps. The Organic Waste Recycling Program is an important way for the community to help address climate change and protect the environment. Participants will receive a free kitchen caddy. The 1.9-gallon, dishwasher-safe caddies are easy to fill, carry, empty, and clean. Recycle Day - Document Shred and HHW/E-Waste Event

Saturday, April 20, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Residents can wrap up their spring cleaning at the City’s free household hazardous waste and electronic waste collection and secure document shred day. Drop off latex paint, motor oil, batteries, and electronics, and bring confidential papers to shred onsite (limit five standard-size boxes per household). West Basin Firescaping Workshop

Tuesday, April 23, 6:00 PM -  8:00 PM. The City is hosting the West Basin Firescaping Workshop class in partnership with the West Basin Municipal Water District, Los Angeles County Waterworks Districts, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. This free event will help Malibu residents learn the benefits and techniques of fire-resistant landscaping for home improvement. North Santa Monica Bay State of the Watershed 2024

Thursday, April 25, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The City invites all community members to attend the 2nd annual North Santa Monica Bay (NSMB) State of the Watershed 2024 at City Hall to learn about local agency efforts to enhance water quality, increase water supply, and preserve wildlife and habitats. The City is hosting the collaborative event with Watershed Coordinator Melina Sempill Watts and the NSMB Watershed Area Steering Committee, including the Cities of Calabasas, Westlake Village, and Agoura Hills, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, and the Los Angeles County Flood Control District. International Dark Sky Week 2024

April 2-8. During International Dark Sky Week, residents are invited to join the Dark Skies movement to reduce light pollution, which impacts nocturnal animals. This year, Dark Sky Week is scheduled to coincide with the 2024 total solar eclipse. The International Dark-Sky Association promotes solutions that allow people to appreciate dark, star-filled skies while enjoying the benefits of responsible outdoor lighting. The Dark Sky Ordinance is meant to preserve Malibu’s nighttime sky and to protect local wildlife. Learn more about light pollution at http://idsw.darksky.org.
