2024 Malibu Library Speaker Series Continues February 21 with Female Firefighter and Author Clare Frank
The 2024 season of the Malibu Library Speaker Series continues on Wednesday, February 21 with Clare Frank discussing her book about her experiences as a firefighter and as California’s first female Chief of Fire Protection. The free event takes place at 7:00 PM at the Malibu Library.
“Please join us in an illuminating discussion of wildfire, the lives of firefighters, and women overcoming gender barriers in the firefighting profession,” said Mayor Steve Uhring. “I applaud the Malibu Library Speaker Series for continuing to bring high-quality, in-person cultural events that enrich the life of our community, educate, inspire and entertain.”
After 30 years on the fire line, Clare Frank will share tales of firehouse life as the lone female on the crew, and of the evolution of wildfires in the west into extreme megafires that present new and more dangerous challenges.
Clare Frank served as the State of California’s first and only female Chief of Fire Protection, and she is the author of “Burnt: A Memoir of Fighting Fire.” She began firefighting at age 17 and worked her way through the ranks, handling fire and rescue emergencies and major disasters in both urban and rural settings. Along the way, she earned a spot on an elite state command team, a bachelor’s degree in fire administration, a law degree, a master’s degree in creative writing, and several leadership awards. Now, she brings humor and candor to her stories about first responders, lawyers, and life. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, New York Post, San Francisco Chronicle, CNN Opinion, Shondaland, FireRescue1, and others.
Space is limited, and RSVPs are required for this free event. The Malibu Library is located at 23519 Civic Center Way, Malibu. For more information or to RSVP, visit the Library Speaker Series webpage or call the Malibu Library at 310-456-6438.
