INSTALLATON OF THE FIRST OF 30 NEW BEACON BOXES TO SUPPORT OUT-OF-AREA FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDING TO FIRES IN MALIBU NEIGHBORHOODS
Malibu Mayor Paul Grisanti, Councilmember Mikke Pierson, Public Safety Commission Vice Chair Doug Stewart, Interim City Manager Steve McClary, Fire Safety Liaison Chris Brossard, Public Safety Manager Susan Dueñas, Big Rock Mesa Property Owners Association members Collin Drummond, Peter Monge and Janet Fulk, and Shea Broussard, co-founder of FlameMappers, were on hand for the installation of the City’s new Beacon Boxes on Thursday, Feb. 24. The Beacon Boxes are weatherproof boxes custom fabricated for the City that offer a physical location to store laminated maps, flash drives with map files, and local details such as emergency vehicle turnarounds and fire hydrants. They can be accessed by any out-of-area firefighting crews responding to a fire in the neighborhood. The Malibu City Council approved the funds for the 30 Beacon Boxes, which will be installed at the base of canyon neighborhoods in Malibu as part of the City’s efforts to be more prepared for the next major wildfire. LA County Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Drew Smith approved the maps.
