The City will host virtual educational presentations on Thursday, September 29 to help residents and businesses be able to comply with the Dark Sky Ordinance requirements by the October 15, 2022 deadline. The presentation for residential properties is at 11:00 AM and for commercial and multi-family properties is at 4:00 PM.

The City of Malibu’s Dark Sky Ordinance is part of the City’s commitment to protecting the environment and the quality of life of our community by reducing light pollution through. Property owners are urged to start the Plan Review process now in order to make the October 15, 2022 Darky Sky deadline.
Here’s how to get started:
- Check all of your outdoor light fixtures, which must be fully shielded, have low color temperature, and direct light downwards to see if any adjustments need to be made. The guidelines and all other information are available at MalibuCity.org/DarkSky.
- Submit a Dark Sky Planning Application to the Planning Department. Applications can be found online at MalibuCity.org/DarkSkyApplication. Completed applications can be submitted to mplanning@malibucity.org. For questions or assistance, contact staff at 310-456-2489, ext. 485 or mplanning@malibucity.org.
- Submit an Electrical Plan Check Review Request to Building Safety online at Malibucity.org/BPApplication.

Dark Sky Ordinance Compliance Deadlines Extended to October 15, 2022
The Malibu City Council on January 10, 2022 extended the deadlines for commercial, residential, and institutional zoning districts to comply with the City’s Dark Sky Ordinance to October 15, 2022. The extension is in response to concerns about non-compliance and community feedback requesting more time and information about the requirements. The Dark Sky Ordinance is meant to reduce light pollution to protect Malibu’s wildlife, habitats and quality of life. Requirements include light fixtures that are fully shielded, have low color temperature, and direct light downwards. The compliance period for gas stations remains October 15, 2019.
