For decades, the Malibu community has longed to govern their own public schools. On September 18, 2021, the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Committee on School District Organization (County Committee) held a preliminary public hearing on the City’s preliminary petition to separate from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SM-MUSD) and to create an independent Malibu Unified School District (MUSD). After hearing presentations from the City and SM-MUSD and public testimony, the County Committee voted to move the City’s petition forward into the regular petition process.
On Wednesday, November 10, at 6:00 PM, the County Committee will hold a public hearing on the City’s petition. Community members are encouraged to attend the virtual hearing and show their support for this effort to give Malibu families local control over local Malibu public schools.
You may also submit written comments or documentation in advance of the meeting by 4:00 PM on Friday, November 5 via email to Anna Heredia at: Heredia_Anna@lacoe.edu
Stay Informed! Community members are also encouraged to get accurate facts and straight answers - the separation process is complex. Visit the City’s webpage.
