Ten years ago a tsunami triggered by a massive earthquake devastated Japan and caused major damage on the California coast. The California Geological Survey has been collecting new data and using improved computer modeling to update its tsunami maps. Public Safety staff recently participated in a briefing on the California Department of Conservation California Tsunami Program’s updated Tsunami Hazard Area Maps that provide information about potential inundation areas in Malibu and will present an overview of what it means for Malibu on Tuesday, April 13 at 6:00 PM during a virtual community meeting. The meeting link and details will be posted in advance at MalibuCity.org

The updated maps will are posted on the state tsunami website for the public to view and download. You can see the tsunami risk in your location by typing in your address. Most of Malibu is not at significant risk. However, the Malibu Lagoon area could see water levels up to 8 feet deep and many ocean front homes and sections of Pacific Coast Highway could be severely impacted by a tsunami generated by a 9.3 magnitude earthquake on the Alaska-East Aleutians fault.
