Red Flag Warning for LA County including Malibu late october 25 through Tuesday October 27 due to Santa Anas, low humidities
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning in effect from late night, Sunday, October 25, through Tuesday afternoon October 27 for strong northeast winds and very low relative humidity for all of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties except for the Antelope Valley.
IMPACTS
Increased risk of fire ignitions due to strong winds downing trees and powerlines; Increased risk of power outages; If fire ignition occurs, conditions will be favorable for very rapid fire growth, extreme fire behavior, and long range spotting bringing a significant threat to life and property. Hazardous road conditions, potential traffic signal outages.
The LA County Fire Department reported that it has augmented staffing, ready for deployment and on-duty resources have been pre-identified for strike team mobility based upon the need.
The City is coordinating with LA County Sheriff’s, Fire, Public Works Departments, Caltrans and other partner agencies, is monitoring fire conditions and will send out alerts as needed.
City Public Works is out patrolling City streets and canyon roads in Malibu monitoring for downed power lines, tree branches, road hazards, and clearing debris from roadways.
Trancas Canyon Park and Charmlee Wilderness Park are closed Monday, Oct 26 and Tuesday, Oct 27 due to Red Flag Fire Conditions in Malibu. The City will announce when the parks are open.
Late Sunday through Monday evening: High confidence for moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event. Strongest and most widespread Santa Ana event so far this season. Widespread critical Red Flag conditions for LA/Ventura counties.
Most critical fire weather conditions in Southern California since October 2019 due to a combination of strong winds, very low humidities, and very dry fuels.
Particularly Dangerous Situation from 2pm to 11 pm Monday, Oct. 26 for LA County mountains due to combination of damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, single digit humidities. Live Fuel Moisture levels around 60%, and 10 hour dead fuel moistures below 7%.
Peak of the Santa Ana winds: late night, Oct. 25, through Monday evening Oct. 26. Ventura coast to Malibu and Hollywood Hills - wind gusts 35-50 mph, and gusts 25-35 mph late Monday night-Tuesday morning.
Humidities lowering rapidly: 15-25% late tonight into early Monday morning, lowering to single digits by late Monday morning and afternoon. RH values down to 3-5% by late Monday (especially LA County). Critically dry fuels.
BE PREPARED
Residents should be prepared for potential wildfires and power outages associated with high winds, and potential evacuations if a fire occurs. Potential for malfunctioning traffic signals. Always approach an intersection where traffic signals are out as if it is an all-way stop sign. Watch for branches and other debris in the roadway.
