City of Malibu Honors the Late Randy “Crawdaddy” Miod with the City’s First Surf Legend Award
At tonight's City Council meeting, Dec. 8, 5:30 PM, the City of Malibu will honor the late Randy “Crawdaddy” Miod with the inaugural Malibu Surf Legend Award. Established in October 2025 by City Council upon the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the award recognizes community members who exemplify excellence in surfing, contributions to local surf culture, and a lasting connection to Malibu.
Randy “Crawdaddy” Miod, born in 1969, lived over three decades in Malibu after moving from the San Fernando Valley. He settled in a small studio by the famed “Crab Shack” on Pacific Coast Highway, earning a reputation for his warmth, humor, and unshakable love of the ocean. Randy’s life was rooted in creativity and community: he worked in local restaurants, played in bands, contributed to the art scene, and earned a photography degree from Santa Monica College.
At Surfrider Beach, Randy’s presence was felt most—surfing daily, offering encouragement, and sharing stories. Friends remember him as hardworking, humble, spirited, and profoundly grateful for life in Malibu. On January 7, 2025, he tragically lost his life in the Palisades Fire, remaining in his home as in previous fires, despite evacuation orders. This fire proved deadly. His passing was a heartbreaking loss for the community.
Tonight’s presentation celebrates Randy’s love of surfing and the generous, authentic way he lived. His legacy continues to inspire Malibu’s surf community and remains an enduring part of the City’s story.
