Caffeinated Verse, Open Mic Poetry

Join Malibu Poet Laureate Dr. John Struloeff at Caffeinated Verse.  The poetry program includes featured readers, Shann Ray and M.L. Smoker, followed by an open-mic format for poets to share their work with the Malibu community. An RSVP is required by calling 310-456-2489, ext. 349 or complete the online formRegistered participants will receive an email with the Zoom link by the Friday before the program. 

About the featured readers 
American Book Award winner Shann Ray's work has been featured in Poetry, Esquire, McSweeney's, Ruminate, Big Sky Journal, The American Journal of Poetry, Diode, Poetry International, Narrative, Prairie Schooner, and Salon. He spent part of his childhood on the Northern Cheyenne reservation in southeast Montana and has served as a scholar of leadership and forgiveness studies in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Ray is the author of Atomic Theory 7, Sweetclover, American Cooper, Blood Fire Vapor Smoke, American Masculine, Balefire, Forgiveness and Power in the Age of Atrocity, and The Souls of Others. He lives with his wife and daughters in Washington and teaches at Gonzaga University. ShannRay.com.

Mandy SmokerBroaddus, lives in Helena and goes by
 M.L. Smoker, is a member of the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes. Smoker is the author of the poetry collection "Another Attempt at Rescue" (2005). With Melissa Kwasny, she co-edited "I Go to the Ruined Place: Contemporary Poems in Defense of Global Human Rights" (2009). Smoker is a practice expert for Education Northwest focusing on equity and inclusion for Native education in the Pacific Northwest and shares the duties of Montana Poet Laureate until 2021 with Kwasny in the first jointly appointed position for the state.
