Each year, the Environmental Sustainability Department produces a variety of special events designed to serve the whole community, including events that are family-friendly, encourage environmental stewardship, promote cultural arts, and offer recycling opportunities. This year marks the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day!

Pepperdine Earth Day Celebration

Pepperdine will host its Earth Day Celebration which incorporates student booths, activities, food, and community organizations. The City will participate with a booth to share active environmental programs and provide the students an opportunity to connect with the environmental community outside Pepperdine.

Dr. Britt Wray: Malibu Library Speaker Series with Pepperdine

Dr. Britt Wray will speak about practical tips and strategies to productively deal with emotions, live with climate trauma, and strengthen our communities to combat climate change together. Climate Calling is a conference sponsored by the Malibu Library Speaker Series and the Pepperdine Office of the Vice Provost and the Center for Sustainability. RSVP online.

Malibu Organic Recycling Virtual Meeting

Wednesday, April 19, 7:00 PM

Learn about organics recycling, waste reduction, and how to handle kitchen food scraps. The Organic Waste Recycling Program is an important way for the community to help address climate change and protect the environment. Participants will receive a free kitchen caddy as well. The 1.9-gallon, dishwasher-safe caddies are easy to fill, carry, empty, and clean. Smart Gardening WOrkshop

Los Angeles County Public Works Department is presenting a free beginners workshop on techniques of backyard composting, worm composting, water-wise gardening, “grasscycling,” and edible gardening. Find additional scheduled workshops online.

INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK

APRIL 22 - 30

As of October 15, 2022, Malibu's commercial, residential, and institutional districts must conform with Dark Sky requirements. Dark Sky is meant to preserve the nighttime sky and reduce light pollution which impacts nocturnal animals. The International Dark-Sky Association promotes solutions that allow people to appreciate dark, star-filled skies while enjoying the benefits of responsible outdoor lighting.
