FIRE REBUILD STATISTICS ONLINE PORTAL

The City has created an interactive online portal that shows statistics on Woolsey Fire rebuilding activities in an effort to keep the community and partner agencies updated on the rebuild progress. The information is updated daily, and tracks progress of all of the various types of permits related to rebuilding Malibu homes destroyed in the fire, and it plots rebuild projects on an interactive map.

WWD29 WATER INFRASTRUCTURE FEE WAIVERS FOR WOOLSEY FIRE REBUILD PROJECTS

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved County Waterworks District 29 (WWD29) water infrastructure improvement fee waivers for customers, including Malibu residents, who were displaced by the Woolsey Fire and are rebuilding their homes, as long as they are seeking a similarly-sized water service.

CITY FEE WAIVERS FOR WOOLSEY FIRE REBUILD PROJECTS

On June 24, City Council approved waiving fees for residents who are rebuilding their homes destroyed in the Woolsey Fire. The 100% fee waivers apply to “like for like” and “like for like” plus 10% projects to rebuild primary residences between November 8, 2018 and June 30, 2020, and applies retroactively to all eligible people who have already paid permitting fees. WOOLSEY FIRE DEBRIS REMOVAL UPDATE

CalOES has completed the Woolsey Fire debris removal under the state-sponsored program on all lots in the City of Malibu. The City continues to work with the County and homeowners on the private Local Program fire debris removal. More than 838 million pounds of ash, debris, metal, concrete and contaminated soil were removed in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. An online dashboard showing fire debris removal progress is available.

GUIDANCE FOR POST-WOOLSEY FIRE REBUILDING OF SEPTIC SYSTEMS

The City created a handout to offer guidance to residents on how to properly replace or repair their septic systems (Onsite Wastewater Treatment System, or OWTS).  

CERT Training

The seven-week course will be held Thursday evenings, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, at City Hall starting on September 5. To register, go to the Eventbrite page. Completing the course is the first step toward becoming a member of the official City of Malibu CERT Team.

Emergency Information Stations

In preparation for possible power outages when the Santa Ana winds are blowing, the City has established a program utilizing Emergency Information Stations. These stations will consist of large sandwich boards placed in key locations across the City where staff can post printed emergency information updates during power or cell phone service outages. The community is invited to see a demonstration of the Emergency Information Stations on Saturday, September 14, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at City Hall. Staff from the City’s Public Safety Office and members of the Malibu CERT Team will be there to answer questions, receive feedback, and provide emergency preparedness information. 

Emergency Preparedness Workshop for Seniors

An Emergency Preparedness Workshop designed for older residents will be offered on Saturday, September 14, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and on Wednesday, September 26, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM, at City Hall. Participants 55 and older who attend the class will be eligible to receive a free emergency backpack that includes basic supplies. To register for either class, go to the Eventbrite page

Skate Park 

The City Council will review options for a temporary skate park and a permanent skate park during a Special Meeting on Wednesday, August 21, at 4:00 PM. The meeting will take place at City Hall, and the staff report can be viewed in the Agenda Center on the City website. 

Shade at Malibu Bluffs Park

The Parks and Recreation Commission will discuss proposed options for installing shade covering at Malibu Bluffs Park at next week’s Regular Meeting on Tuesday, August 20 at 5:30 PM at City Hall. You can view the meeting agenda and staff report in the Agenda Center on the City website. 

La Costa Pedestrian Improvements

This project consist of installing a hybrid pedestrian traffic signal located adjacent to the La Costa Beach Club on PCH. The contractor completed the installation of the concrete signal pole foundations, and will be installing the new signal poles on Monday and performing electrical work. The proposed signal pole installation work will require the ongoing lane closures in both directions. Monday through Wednesday, August 19 - 21, there will be alternating lane closures on one lane in each direction. Southbound lanes 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Northbound lanes 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM. 

Malibu Pier Parking Lot

Caltrans completed “Keep Clear” pavement markings on southbound PCH near the Malibu Pier parking lot. The new pavement markings will improve traffic flow for vehicles attempting to turn left into the Malibu Pier Parking Lot.

Dark Sky Ordinance

The compliance deadline for gas stations is October 15, 2019. The compliance deadline for all other non-residential properties is one year later on October 15, 2020. The compliance deadline for all residential properties is October 15, 2021. For more information, visit the Dark Sky Ordinance page.  

MALIBU SMART WATER CONSERVATION

The grass lawn replacement rebate for Malibu residents has increased to $5 per square foot, the highest in the state. The increased incentive is part of the Malibu Smart water conservation program offered by the City of Malibu, County of Los Angeles and West Basin Municipal Water District. Some grass removal restrictions have been waived for residents whose properties were impacted by the Woolsey Fire. To apply for the fire exemption, call 888-376-3314 or apply online.

Residents of Malibu are also eligible to receive incentives for smart irrigation technologies, which can be controlled by a smart phone and identify leaks before they become costly and wasteful. Malibu Smart also offers free water conservation concierge service for certain customers, water audits and workshops. To learn more, visit the Malibu Smart website.

  • Saturday, September 14 – Preparedness Class for Seniors and People with Disabilities
  • September 18 – Disaster Notification System Test (Malibu central west)

  • August 19 – Planning Commission will consider the follow-up Coastal Development Permit application pertaining to the SCE laydown utility yard located at the corner of Civic Center Way and Stuart Ranch Road
  • August 26 – City Council will consider adoption of an ordinance to halt primary view determinations where the view would be over a property affected by the Woolsey Fire or other natural disaster
  • August 26 – City Council will consider adoption of the Coastal Commission’s suggested modifications to the Local Coastal Program (LCP) amendment to implement the Housing Element of the General Plan and to update the LCP Public Access Map
  • September 10 - Firescaping Workshop at City Hall. Participants will learn about landscaping techniques to help protect your property from wildfires.
