Join Malibu's Classes and Activities Throughout September for National Preparedness Month

All Malibu community members are encouraged to be part of the efforts to promote community-wide emergency preparedness and join the City of Malibu’s classes, drills and activities scheduled throughout September for National Disaster Preparedness Month.

SEPTEMBER 2 – 8 

Weekly Theme – Prepare for an Earthquake 

Wednesday, September 4
Disaster Notification System Test (Eastern Malibu) 
Every week during September, the City will conduct a test of the Disaster Notification System (Everbridge) as part of ongoing efforts to make it more effective and to raise awareness among the community about how it will be used during a disaster. On Wednesday, September 4, the system will be tested in eastern Malibu. The City recently acquired nearly all cell phone numbers for Malibu-area accounts so residents do not need to sign up. However, if residents want to add multiple phone numbers, they can still create a profile  on the Disaster Notification System page.

Public Safety Commission Presentation - Power Shutoffs and the City's Points of Information Distribution System
A presentation will be during the Public Safety Commission meeting at City Hall about preparing for Southern California Edison (SCE’s) Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) plan and the City’s Points of Information Distribution System which will help the City communicate with the public during power or cell phone service outages. The public is welcome to attend and make public comment. The agenda  and staff report will posted in advance of the meeting in the website Agenda Center

CERT Training
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class for seven consecutive Thursday evenings, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Malibu City Hall. The free training empowers citizens to help themselves and their neighbors during disasters. Through hands-on training, participants learn the most up-to-date information in basic disaster preparedness, the use of a fire extinguisher, disaster medical care, first aid, search and rescue techniques, disaster psychology and neighborhood team building. Panel Discussion: "Preparing for Fire: Malibu Residents Share Their Experiences" 
Malibu residents will share their experiences from the Woolsey Fire to help others know what to expect during a disaster and make their own preparedness plans. No RSVPs needed. For more information, visit the event page

Saturday, September 14, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Demonstration of the City's new Emergency Points of Distribution and Information Stations. In preparation for widespread power outages or other emergencies, Malibu CERT Team members along with the City's public safety staff will practice and demonstrate the new system intended to provide basic supplies and emergency information to residents during disasters or widespread power outages when communications capabilities are hindered. Community members are invited to stop by any time during to see the set-up, provide feedback and get emergency preparedness information.

Disaster Notification System Test (Western Central Malibu)

Thursday, September 19, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Fire Safe Council Workshop at City Hall. Learn how to form a Fire Safe Council, a grassroots, community-led organization that mobilizes residents to protect their homes, communities and environments from catastrophic wildfires. Experienced Fire Safe Council members and L.A. County Fire Department Assistant Chief J. Lopez, who is also a California Fire Safe Council Board Member, will help lead the workshop. Red-Flag Season Community Fire Briefing at City Hall to keep the community up to date on the outlook for the upcoming peak fire season. The peak fire season generally begins in the fall with the onset of hot, dry, powerful Santa Ana winds that create extremely dangerous wildfire conditions and often result in Red Flag warnings. Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Drew Smith, a Fire Behavior Analyst, will provide information on local fuel moisture, expected weather patterns, and what that means for Malibu.
