During the February 26 Council meeting, the City Council voted to prohibit the sale, distribution and use of single-use plastic straws and cutlery within the City to protect the environment from plastic pollution. Malibu is a leader in environmental protections, and banned plastic bags, plastic sandbags, and polystyrene foam. The ocean, beaches and natural surroundings are a central part of life in Malibu, and we are committed to keeping them clean for ourselves, our children and their children in the future. More than 500 million plastic straws are discarded every day in America, enough to wrap around the earth 2.5 times. The City will provide a box of environmentally safe “Keep it Clean Malibu” paper straws to local restaurants. The law goes into effect June 1, 2018.
