SMMUSD Virtual Town Hall - Models for Reopening Malibu Schools

Tuesday, July 7, 2020

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Board of Education will hold a series of virtual town hall-style meetings in late June and early July to share with the community three potential models for reopening schools in the fall and to answer questions from parents and staff.

SMMUSD has developed three possible models for reopening schools based on health guidelines, parent and staff survey results, and the District’s available resources.

Virtual Town Hall meeting dates
  • Santa Monica elementary school community members – Tuesday, June 30, 6:00 PM
  • Santa Monica secondary school community members – Wednesday, July 1, 6:00 PM
  • Malibu school community members – Tuesday, July 7, 6:00 PM
During these virtual meetings, staff will present the results of the parent and staff surveys, and will walk through the rationale and details associated with the three potential models for reopening schools. Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati will share the three models in a letter to school families in advance of the meetings.

Background
As Los Angeles County Departments of Health release their implementation plans for schools to reopen in response to the California Department of Education’s health guidelines, school districts across the state are developing multiple reopening models as they consider how to best meet their community’s various needs, while complying with the health guidelines.

Additional Meeting Information
Additional details regarding the structure of the town hall meetings will be shared the week of June 22, including how to submit questions ahead of time.
