SMMUSD Board of Education Special Meeting

Tuesday, May 30

The Board will discuss the Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee (MUNC) report regarding negotiated terms and conditions aimed to resolve financial concerns associated with the separation of SMMUSD into two separate districts: the Malibu Unified School District (MUSD) and Santa Monica Unified School District (SMUSD).

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education will hold a special
meeting on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 6:45 pm in the Malibu City Council Chambers. This is a rescheduling of a discussion item that originally appeared on the April 20, 2017 Board
meeting agenda
 (Item No. D.03).

During this special meeting, the Board of Education will have an opportunity to review and
discuss the updated report from the Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee in greater depth and determine next steps.

On March 7, the Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee, consisting of representatives from Santa Monica and from Malibu, presented its report regarding the negotiated terms and
conditions aimed to resolve financial concerns associated with the unification of a separate
Malibu Unified School District (MUSD).

The committee’s report addressed: 1) the operating budget impact of reorganization; 2) the
division of the SMMUSD’s assets (fund balances, land/buildings); 3) bond-related items and
other liabilities; 4) environmental liability; and 5) the implementation of the committee’s
recommendations.

Following the special Board meeting on March 7, the committee held community input sessions on the report in Santa Monica (March 21) and Malibu (March 27).

The Santa Monica representatives on the committee included: Tom Larmore, Paul Silvern, and Debbie Mulvaney; the Malibu representatives included: Laura Rosenthal, Manel Sweetmore, and Makan Delrahim (resigned January 2017).

More information about MUNC can be viewed on the SMMUSD website at SMMUSD.org/Superintendent/MalibuUnification.
