Civic Center Design Standards
Project Status
As of June 24, 2019, the City Council removed this item from the Fiscal Year 2019-2020 Work Plan.
Project Overview
In 2014, the City Council tasked the Planning Department with establishing a set of Civic Center Design Standards as the first phase of a longer term goal of creating a Civic Center Specific Plan.
To complete the project, the City Council appointed a 10-member Civic Center Design Standards Task Force who worked with the City’s design team, MIG Consultants and John Kaliski Architects, to prepare a set of design standards to enhance the Civic Center area.
The project included a kick-off community event and task force meetings. See below for a list of meeting materials.
Following the court's overturning of Measure R, the City reopened discussions of regulations on chain stores and options for a Civic Center Specific Plan. On August 14, 2017, the City Council directed staff to schedule public hearing to consider a specific plan overlay district for the Civic Center; research alternative methods of regulating community character in commercial zone; and evaluate the Civic Center Guidelines that were prepared by the Civic Center Design Standards Task Force.
